Flood relief grant available for small businesses in Malvern Hills area
9:47am Tuesday 15th April 2014 in News
SMALL businesses hit by the recent flooding can apply for a new relief grant from Malvern Hills District Council. The £500 loss of trade grant is likely to particularly benefit businesses in Upton-upon-Severn, which suffered significantly from prolonged road closures and also saw a dramatic decrease in footfall, as well as traffic.
MHDC has been working with Upton Town Council, Business Association and Town Partnership representatives who suggested a small grant to recognise the loss to traders in the town would be well received and provide many with vital help in managing cash flow in small businesses.
Councillor Phil Grove, portfolio holder for economic development, said: "We have lobbied hard for extra resources to help our district's businesses recover from the recent flooding and I am particularly pleased we will be able to support those traders in the Upton area who suffered from a very tough trading period while most of the town's main routes were closed.”
Annette Keyworth of Upton Business Association added: "It’s been a really difficult time for Upton businesses and we have been grateful for the support of local shoppers, but this funding will be invaluable to Upton businesses that have seen significant loss of trade. We are looking forward to working closely with Malvern Hills District Council and others to promote Upton as open for business."
MHDC will manage the grant scheme to support small and medium sized businesses in flood affected areas of Malvern Hills district that suffered a significant loss of trade due to flooding between December 1 and February 28. A single grant payment of £500 is available for eligible businesses, which must be independent and not have the support of a national chain. Applications will be accepted until May 30. Application forms are available on the council's website at www.malvernhills.gov.uk/business or contact the economic development team at Malvern Hills District Council on 01684 862151 or email
