A STOURPORT opticians is holding a bake sale on Saturday to raise funds for an organisation supporting people faced with a potentially life-threatening condition.

The Specsavers event at the High Street branch will support the store’s nominated charity, UK Sepsis Trust.

"The Sepsis Trust is a charity that is particularly close to our hearts, as one of our staff members lost her mother to the disease a couple of years ago," said Tim Reeves, store director.

Sepsis is a common condition, triggered by an infection. In sepsis, the body’s immune system goes into overdrive, setting off a series of reactions, including widespread inflammation, swelling and blood clotting.

That can lead to a significant decrease in blood pressure, which can mean the blood supply to vital organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys is reduced.

If not treated quickly, sepsis can eventually lead to multiple organ failure and death.

Each year in the UK, it is estimated that more than 100,000 people are admitted to hospital with sepsis and around 37,000 people will die as a result of the condition.

UK Sepsis Trust is a non-profit registered charity, which aims to help the way the healthcare system deals with Sepsis. For more information visit sepsistrust.org
