A LIFEGUARD at a Wyre Forest leisure centre has been nominated for an unsung hero award for going above and beyond his job description.

Jack Crompton has been recognised by the Spirit of Flame Awards for his work at Wyre Forest Glades Leisure Centre.

Contract manager Stuart Booton nominated Mr Crompton for the award for the large amount of volunteering and charity work he takes part in.

Mr Crompton, who has worked at the leisure centre for four years, coaches the West Midland Disabled Swimming team and has helped to train two swimmers, Daniel Jones and Liam Reid, to represent the region in the team.

He also coaches football and athletics and has helped one footballer Mathew Batham be selected to represent the West Midland Disabled Football Team.

Mr Crompton is also actively involved in fundraising events including helping to organise an event swimming the equivalent of the English Channel as part of a three-man team which raised more than £1,500 for Leukemia UK.

He is also a volunteer with the Kidderminster Lions Club and has collected money for good causes in their Santa sleigh and volunteered with Halo Homes, helping elderly residents with disabilities socialise and play games including bowls, bingo and creative activities.

The Spirit of Flame Unsung Hero Award 2014 aims to celebrate an individual achieving the extraordinary outside of their working hours.
