STAFF and clients at a Kidderminster dementia day care centre are celebrating the service's 10th anniversary.

Among Friends, in George Street, has launched a three-month long celebration to recognise the work that staff have done challenging stereotypes and raising awareness of dementia.

Service users have been busy creating a butterfly mosaic with the help of Janet and John Adey from Mosaic Supplies Limited to form a display marking the occasion.

The choice of a butterfly is poignant as Frank Lancaster, 82, who attends Among Friends, was an avid butterfly spotter and regularly bought his slides of unusual butterflies to the centre.

Anniversary celebrations will have a nature theme and will include making butterfly bunting and planting flowers specifically selected to attract butterflies.

Lead well-being worker Angela Robinson said: "As well as being a beautiful display to mark our tenth anniversary, the butterfly mosaic has had real physical and emotional benefits for our clients.

"Creating the mosaic was something that all clients could get involved in and have really enjoyed. Undertaking the activity together initiated all sorts of conversations and invoked some wonderful memories. We are really looking forward to seeing the finished piece.”

Among Friends client Edith Marshall said: "Making the butterfly has been a wonderful experience, it will look so lovely on the wall. Hopefully there will be real butterflies in the garden this summer.”
