Deferred planning applications set to be addressed

Controversial applications by Tesco to extend the Squirrel Pub in Areley Common, Areley Kings - which it plans to turn into a Tesco Express convenience store - and another, by Load Street, Bewdley-based Severn Indian Cuisine, to move its kitchen, were deferred last month for councillors to take a look at the sites.

Members of Wyre Forest District Council's planning committee are now expected to make their final decisions at this month's committee meeting, which takes place tomorrow at 6pm at Wyre Forest House. Both applications have been recommended for approval by planning officers.

Tesco is planning to demolish two outbuildings and alter the shop front of the Squirrel Pub but, legally, does not need permission to change the use of the inn to a convenience store. The plans have sparked heated debate between residents opposed to the plans due to transport and quality of life concerns and Tesco staff, who say the company will be "good neighbours".

Recommending approval in a report which will go before councillors next Tuesday, planning officer Paul Round said: "The impact on noise and disturbance has been carefully considered and also found to be acceptable."

A decision is also due to be made on Severn Indian Cuisine's proposal to move its kitchen following complaints about odour and noise pollution. The plans follow complaints about the current extractor fan in an alleyway next to the restaurant, which was once a cafe, surrounded by flats after residents claimed the small of cooking was blowing into their homes.

Recommending approval, planning officer Julia McKenzie-Watts said: "The plans will not have an undue impact on local amenity."

Councillors are also likely to give approval to a retrospective application for a detention pond at the former British Sugar Site off Stourport Road, which will act as a drainage system for surface water on the Hoobrook Link Road, which is due to be built later this year.
