A GROUP of Bewdley's top chefs served up a treat as the competed to win the fourth annual town salad challenge.

The event took place following the Bewdley Spring Fair and was held at the town's Jubilee Gardens on bank holiday Monday, May 5, at 3pm.

Pomodoro chef Pietro Madau beat out five other contestants from The Mug House, Paisley Flour Catering, Little Pack Horse, the Hop Pole and the Bewdley Museum-based Shambled Cafe to win the competition - which was judged by town Mayor Linda Candlin and last year's winner Mark Flello.

The event sees ingredients supplied by Bewdley Farm Shop and the Deli@Bewdley. Chefs have three minutes to choose their ingredients and may bring one of their own, then 10 minutes to make their salad.

The winning entry featured a concoction of raspberries and rhubarb dipped in balsamic vinegar.

Spring Fair coordinator Chris Griffin said: "We do this event to demonstrate that we have some really good chefs in the town.

"A lot of people came out to watch and they got to taste the salads at the end. It was packed we were very very pleased, the event really is establishing itself as an annual event. The standard is getting better and better.

"The chefs are thinking about proper ingredients and they do not know what the Bewdley FarmShop will bring - usually they bring what is local and fresh on the day.

"We like to make the event a bit of theatre so people see the chefs working and it is an opportunity to show off what a great food offering we have in the town and what great suppliers we have. We look forward to the fifth event next year."

Other people organising the event included fair coordinators Elly Hooper and Neville Farmer.
