A GROUP of sporty school pupils will jet off to Jamaica this summer to coach youngsters in the country.

The six year 11 students from Stourport High School and VIth Form Centre have been spending the past school year raising funds for the volunteering and leadership trip to Mandeville, which is being organised by the Wyre Forest School Sports Partnership. The six students are Logan Gray, Alex Cook, Sophie Jancey, Sam Foley, Holly Elliott and Jack Rowley.

The total cost of the trip is about £20,000 and the young people have raised about £14,000 so far through a series of fund-raising events and sponsored bag packs. They will set off on July 20 and spend 10 days coaching in three difference schools for two days each, then running a festival for the pupils on the seventh day. They will also be volunteering in a local orphanage.

The next bag packs will take place at Stourport’s Tesco Metro, Lombard Street, on Saturday, May 31, Kidderminster’s Green Street Morrisons on Sunday, June 8 and the Co-op in Stourport High Street on Sunday, June 22. They will also have a stall at Stourport High School’s summer fun night on Monday, June 9.

Alexandra Mays, partnership development manager at Wyre Forest School Sports Partnership, is leading the team. She said: “We have trained up a group of young leaders who are exceptional - you would never guess they are 16 years old, so it is great to see they wanted to take their leadership to the next level by going on the trip.
