A FORMER Kidderminster College student is set to gain an executive job in the hotel industry.

Richard Johnson, 22, of Kidderminster, studied a BTEC National Diploma in Travel and Tourism at the college before gaining a place at university to study for a degree in (BA) Hon(s) Hospitality Business Management.

He is now nearing the end of his degree study at University College Birmingham, a course that includes a 48-week placement at luxury hotels in Dubai, and has potential job offerings in marketing executive positions.

He said: “I wouldn’t be where I am now without the college and its support services and I can’t thank them enough. The prospectus said the course could lead to a job as a marketing executive and how right that has proved to be.

“The course provided a fantastic platform for me to develop and progress towards getting a degree and then a job in the area I wanted.”

Victoria Ditton, learner services manager, said: “Many people don’t realise that vocational qualifications can also lead to places at university and the in-depth knowledge students gain while at the college really stands them in good stead.

"I am delighted for Richard, who was an excellent student and wish him all the best in his chosen career.”

Mr Johnson, who enjoys travelling and spent nine years living in India as a child, is due to go to Dubai again next month.

He said: “I am looking forward to going again. It’s a great platform to learn about diverse cultures and visiting different countries helps you to grow as a person.”
