AN EXHIBITION open day at the Museum of Carpet will showcase the findings of an archaeological dig which took place last summer.

On display at the open day this Saturday, which is part of the nationwide Festival of Archaeology, will be a variety of artefacts found during the dig, including Kidderminster pottery.

The excavation, known as DigMinster, ran between August 27 and September 24 last year at St Mary’s Church in Kidderminster and set out to find the Anglo Saxon origins of the town.

The Heritage Lottery-funded dig involved more than 100 volunteers and received visits from schoolchildren and as well as two open days, which attracted more than 300 visitors.

Caroline Norcott, one of the volunteers, said: “The dig was a brilliant opportunity to give people with an interest in archaeology the chance to learn from professionals and undertake an excavation in their own town.

“There was a huge amount of interest in what we were doing at the time and this exhibition gives people the perfect chance to come and see for themselves what was found, how we found it and how that changes what we understand of the history of Kidderminster.”

Volunteers from the dig will be present at the open day to talk about their experiences. There will also be hourly showings of a behind-the-scenes short film and archaeologically-themed activities for children.

The open day is being held in the foyer of the museum between 10.30am and 4.30pm and is free to visit.
