A SMALL picket was held outside the Matalan store in Kidderminster last Saturday regarding an industrial tragedy in Bangladesh.

In April 2013 1,129 workers died when the Rana Plaza factory complex in Savar, which Matalan sourced clothing from, collapsed and the protestors want to know whether the retail chain has paid a “fair amount” into the disaster’s official compensation fund.

Seven people took part in the Kidderminster protest and handed out leaflets to members of the public, while similar demonstrations were held outside stores across the country.

The campaign, which has attracted more than 103,000 signatures on its 38degrees.org.uk petition, is calling for Matalan to publish details of its donation.

A spokeswoman for Matalan said: “We at Matalan continue to be deeply shocked by the tragedy at Rana Plaza and its effects on the families of those killed or injured.

“From the beginning we realised that urgent and continued support was needed to get help to the families as soon as possible.

“We wish to make it clear that we have never been ordered by any organisation to pay compensation or been found culpable for the tragedy.

“However our company is happy to continue to make substantial contributions to help the people who need it most.”
