NEIGHBOURS in Kidderminster have revived the community spirit of days gone by at an event hosted by a Worcestershire-based housing association.

Nexus Housing joined with Waterloo Housing to set up a vintage tea party for the residents of Hawfinch Rise, Spennells, as a way of bringing the community together and helping neighbours get to know each other.

Reminiscent of a 1940s street party, parents were given home-baked cakes and refreshments while children were kept entertained with a range of craft activities, face painting and a soft play area.

More than 40 residents came along to join the fun and meet their neighbours. They were also given the opportunity to chat with staff from Nexus about issues such as money advice and home repairs, as well as discuss ideas on how to maintain community spirit.

Katie Hannibal, housing officer at Nexus, explained: “It’s important that our customers know about the services and support that we offer and events such as these are a great way for us to build lasting relationships with our residents.

“Everyone really enjoyed themselves. Children had the opportunity to play safely outdoors while their parents got to chat with each other. This event really helped us to create a strong sense of community in Spennells and work towards our goal of creating places where people are proud to live and work.”

Since the event, residents have expressed an interest in getting involved with more community-focused initiatives.

Rachael Hodges, a Nexus tenant who attended the tea party, said: “I think the event was really good for the children and parents in the area. It got you chatting to people who you might live close to, but otherwise would not have the chance to talk to.

“It would be nice to see it as a regular event.”

Nexus is already making plans to build on the success of the tea party by hosting another event later in the year.
