MILITARY history buffs were in attendance for a talk entitled The Battle of Crecy – 1346 at a monthly society meeting.
The latest talk of the Mercian Military History Society was carried out by group member Tony Murray who explained it was the first battle of the Hundred Year War, which lasted from 1337 to 1453.
Mr Murray described the political and warlike efforts of King Edward III as he set about retaking those lost lands.
This first phase of the Hundred Years War ended in Edward’s invasion of France and his advance and retreat across the country culminating in the battle.
It was at this battle that the French Nobles and their chivalric code were defeated by the largely peasant English and Welsh Archers.
The next meeting of the group is on Wednesday, October 1, at Plymouth Court, Redditch, where the talk will cover the 1914 Battle of Gheluvelt by Colonel Jackson of the Worcestershire Regiment.
Doors to the talk, which costs £3, open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
