A KIDDERMINSTER girl has shaved her head in a show of sisterly solidarity.

Lucy Loach, 16, got the grade one cut in support of her younger sibling Megan Foxall, 12, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in July and is losing her locks following chemotherapy treatment for the cancer.

The hair-chopping challenge raised money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where Megan is being cared for, and Ronald McDonald House Charities which has provided the family with on-site accommodation during visits to the ward.

Lucy, a student at Heart of Worcestershire College, said: “It was really hard to deal with at the start when we found out about the illness and it affected us all emotionally.

“But Megan has still got a happy spirit and slowly we learnt to cope better.

“I wanted to do something to help out my sister and make her proud of me.

“At first she thought we are both going to look really weird but now she is happy and pleased I am getting my head shaved.”

Lucy’s haircut was one of the star attractions at a fun day put on by the family at the Royal Exchange pub in Kidderminster on Friday, September 5.

The event, which was largely organised by the 16-year-old, included a barbecue, cake stalls, raffles and live music and more than one hundred people attended.

Donations from the fundraiser will be added to the sponsorship of £877 Lucy has already raised.

She added: “Both of the charities are close to our hearts and it means a lot to be able to support them.

“Some of the money will be used to re-stock the toy room at ward 15 of the hospital to help make it a bit more enjoyable for the ill children.”
