Makeover for old pavilion

WYRE Forest sportsmen and women have been given the chance to sample some luxury before and after their games thanks to an innovative changing rooms project.

It is hoped the £140,000 facelift, led by the district council, will attract more players to Kidderminster's White Wickets, off Franche Road, which is home to four football pitches, along with facilities for bowls and cricket.

The rundown old pavilion, which became a regular target for vandals, has been replaced with a money-saving log cabin style structure now boasting four changing rooms and showers.

It has taken builders, who had to cut and shape the timber imported from Romania, about 10 months to make the blueprint a reality.

Nathan Desmond, the council's cabinet member for community and leisure services, said he was delighted with the "long-overdue" works.

He explained: "The changing rooms were an absolute disgrace because they had been left to go to rack and ruin. We have now got something there that we can be proud of.

"It looks very unusual and could become quite iconic. The log timber building is an innovative solution to providing changing facilities at half the cost of a standard brick building.

"We think sport is very important. We hope by refurbishing the changing rooms, which were neglected for about 15 years, more people will be encouraged to get down there and get active."
