PUPILS at a Kidderminster School have been taking part in lots of activities to commemorate World War One.

Students throughout St Mary’s C of E Primary School took part in the World War One focus week to honour the 100th anniversary.

The pupils have filled shoeboxes and wrote letters to send out to service men and women in Sierra Leone.

Charlotte Heeley, a class teacher at St Mary’s, said: “We asked parents and children to collect items and bring them into school to put in the shoeboxes.

"The shoeboxes included a range of toiletries, both male and female, such as soap, roll on deodorant, hair bands, lip balm, shower gel and shaving sets and also sweets, biscuits, crisps and tiptops.

"We also included letters from each class thanking the service men and women.

“We have 26 shoeboxes ready and wrapped up to send to Sierra Leone.”

As well as creating the shoeboxes, the students took part in writing tasks including writing diary entries and letters, a walking visit to the war memorial outside St Mary’s Church and creating and selling poppies in school.

A special assembly, organised by Year Five and Six pupils, took place on Tuesday, November 11, which included poems and prayers about World War One.

Miss Heeley added: "The assembly was fantastic. The Year Five and Six children worked very hard to create a moving and informative assembly for the school.

"We also had a high number of parents attend who also joined us in a two minute silence."
