COUNCIL chiefs have stepped in to help replace Wyre Forest bus services axed by a crisis-hit Kidderminster company.

Worcestershire County Council has arranged for replacement services to support passengers travelling between Bewdley and Stourport, as well as those living in Wribbenhall.

The arrangements have been put in place following the announcement by Whittle Coach and Bus Ltd last month that it was to withdraw its 2A and 2C services from Monday (December 15).

Bosses reluctantly took this decision because of a staff exodus following the decision by parent company EYMS to put Whittles’ up for sale due to years of incurring losses.

From December 15, Worcestershire County Council will operate an hourly off-peak service, number 15, between Stourport and Bewdley.

Diamond Bus company has also agreed to divert its number 2 and certain journeys on the 2L service via the Wribbenhall estate – continuing the link for passengers to Bewdley and Kidderminster.

Other services currently operated by Whittle's will be changing from January 5 and the council is currently finalising details for their replacement at present.

An announcement on arrangements for these services is anticipated to be announced shortly.

Cllr John Smith OBE, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "The team have been working hard to put in place alternatives for passengers since we were informed of Whittle's intention to withdraw from operating services a few weeks ago.

"The good news for passengers is that solutions have been found. Ensuring links continued to be in place was obviously important but, given the proximity to the festive period, it was crucial to clear any confusion about the future."

David Shipp, General Manager for Whittles, said: “Whilst I am pleased that important links have been retained for residents of Wribbenhall and Bewdley I am extremely disappointed that Whittles current trading position has meant that we are unable to continue operating our new routes that we really felt could have made a positive change for local people.”
