CHILDREN and adults across Wyre Forest got into the spirit of Red Nose Day by donning fancy dress and holding fundraising activities to help raise money for Comic Relief.

Comic Relief has raised more than £1billion since the charity was founded 30 years ago, with more than £78 million raised by the end of Friday’s coverage on BBC.

The charity’s theme this year was ‘making your face funny for money’.

Kidderminster and District Youth Trust celebrated the day by holding a Cake Spectacular, which raised over £200 for the cause. Visitors to the event included Mark Garnier MP and Cliff Brewer, Mayor of Stourport.

Cat Neale, lead youth worker, said: “We were really pleased with how successful the event was, the young people put a lot of effort into running the event so it was brilliant how the community supported it too.”

At Little Trinity Nursery, on Birmingham Road, the children dressed in red to help raise money for the cause, including learning about a girl called Matilda who lives in Zambia, and how their lives compared.

Gaynor Carter, nursery manager, said: “I am so proud of the children. They engaged in all the activities and took on board all we discussed about Matilda and how they would like to help her and other children in similar situations.”

Local community choir Got 2 Sing raised £550 for the cause while donning their red noses and red outfits and staff at Kidderminster’s branch of Specsavers dressed up as famous film and TV stars, adding the official Red Nose Day glasses to their outfit.

Meanwhile pupils and staff at Heathfield School, in Wolverley, held a red non-uniform day and paid £1 to have their faces painted, raising £366 in total.

Zennor’s Dance Academy students wore fancy dress every night last week to help raise money for the cause.

Staff and students from Wolverley CE Secondary School proved they could do something funny for money by raising £866 for Comic Relief.

The school had an Alice in Wonderland theme for the day and, as part of the non-uniform day, students came to school dressed as the Mad Hatter, Alice, rabbits, the Ace of Spades and the Queen of Hearts.  The best dressed were invited to a Mad Hatters Tea Party.

Pupils at Burlish Park Primary School, in Stourport, joined in the with the spirit by wearing red noses and the colour red to school.

Lynda Williams, eco school co-ordinator, said: "Burlish Park parents and pupils have supported this worthy cause for the past seven years.

"Children make a donation to Comic Relief for the privilege of not wearing their school uniform. This year was yet again a great success and we raised over £200 for the charity."
