A STOURPORT fairground boss has taken over an iconic South Wales attraction following the completion of a deal.
Henry Danter, who owns Treasure Island in Stourport, plans to transform Barry Island Pleasure Park and restore it to its former glory with a £20million revamp.
His first task will be to reopen Barry Island, which was featured in hit BBC comedy Gavin and Stacey, in time for Easter on Good Friday with a small family fun fair.
The Danters have been in negotiation with previous owners Hilco for some time before the deal was finally completed last week.
Henry’s daughter Kimberley, who runs the Danter-owned Symonds Yat West Leisure Park, said: “This is very much our day. The sun is shining and we are finally getting the keys to Barry Island.
“The deal has been on the cards for some time but the previous owners had a lot of planning issues they needed to sort but we have finally moved forward.
“The hard work begins here. We will put on a small family fair in time for Easter on Friday – ideally we would have liked to have more time but we will be putting on a show.
“Our longer term plans are to invest in Barry Island, such as building a new arcade, and making it a hugely popular attraction once again.
“My cousins James and Billy Danter will be running Barry Island as we are very much a family business.”
