SCHOOLCHILDREN at a school in Stourport brightened up the last day of the school term when they arrived for lessons dressed in dazzling coloured clothes to take part in Earth Hour.

The annual event, organised by conservation group WWF (World Wildlife Fund) to promote climate change, saw the pupils at Burlish Park Primary School do all they could to show their love for the earth, which included going without lights and electrical appliances for an hour at school, while the rest of the world took part on Saturday (March 28) at 8.30pm.

Other activities at the Windermere Way-based school included tree ad sapling planting, making Easter bonnets with an Earth Hour theme, and colourful bunting.

Lynda Williams, eco schools co-ordinator, said: "This year Earth Hour in school clashed with our Easter bonnet competition and the eco council decided to ask pupils to design their Easter bonnets with an Earth Hour theme.

"Our children really enjoyed participating in the activities on the day as well as learning about the impact individuals can have on the environment. As well as turning lights off in school for an hour many of our pupils joined millions of people around the world in turning lights off at home on Saturday."

Not only did the school champion Earth Hour for the sixth-year running, Burlish Park Primary is also in the process of a new school build integrating many energy-saving ideas suggested by school pupils, including solar roof panels.
