A DISABLED war veteran will be riding through Kidderminster on a mission to break the world record for driving the furthest on a mobility scooter.

Andy McIntosh started his intrepid travels on the TGA mobility scooter from John O'Groats to Land's End today (Tuesday, May 5) and will stopping in Kidderminster overnight on May 15th before leaving for the check point in Lydney the following day.

Having served in the Cheshire Regiment for 14 years experiencing front line action in Bosnia, Iraq, and Northern Ireland, in 2008, Mr McIntosh discovered he had a very rare and inoperable vascular condition, which severely restricts his circulation and mobility and he turned his focus to raising money for the military charities that supported him and his family.

He said: "There have been a lot of tears since receiving the news that my condition is untreatable, but I am a man that never gives up. I've been in some very dark places but I won't let this beat me. This world record attempt will be a real challenge for sure, but gives me a focus to remain positive and ensures I can thank the charities that have been so supportive to my family and I. Despite my walking difficulties and health issues, I am determined to complete this epic journey and raise funds to help fellow disabled servicemen and women."

From today (Tuesday), Mr McIntosh will drive a TGA Breeze the length of Britain in attempts to beat the current world record time which currently stands at 24 days and nine hours, by completing it in less than 16 days, averaging more than 63 miles per day, totalling 1,011 miles.

The scooter being used for the challenge, which will raise money for Poppy Scotland, SSAFA, ABF The Soldier’s Charity, Erskine and Soldiers off the Streets, has been lent to Mr McIntosh by TGA Mobility.

Daniel Stone, TGA managing director, said he and the company had complete confidence in the veteran to beat the world record.

"We are fully behind Andy and are delighted to be assisting with fundraising for his chosen military charities," he said.

"We have every confidence he will beat the world record. He has already employed his military expertise and precision during the planning stages so this challenge promises to unfold efficiently.

"Coupled with our loaned Breeze S4 GT that is proven to deliver 100 per cent reliability and comfort in extreme conditions, Andy should achieve a new world record that will be memorable for all."
