A KIND Stourport woman is urging residents to give their ‘thumbs-up’ in memory of inspirational Midland teenager Stephen Sutton.

Rebecca Williams is encouraging people to take ‘selfies’ of themselves on May 14 and make a donation to her fundraising page to help collect much needed cash for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

She was inspired to arrange the event on the first anniversary of Stephen’s death, following his battle with cancer.

The charity activist captured the hearts of the nation with his fundraising efforts and the ‘Stephen’s Story’ blog that documented his battle against stage 3B colorectal cancer, which he was diagnosed with at the age of 15.

He sadly died at the age of 19 but he has helped raise more than £5million for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Rebecca said she has been inspired to arrange the thumbs-up selfie fundraiser, along the lines of what comedian Jason Manford instigated last year, to mark the anniversary of his death and help keep his legacy alive.

She said: “I spoke to Stephen’s mum and made a commitment for the Teenage Cancer Trust to celebrate Stephen’s achievements.

“As May 14 is the anniversary of his death, I thought it would be appropriate to take the opportunity to remember him and help keep his legacy alive.

“Whether people are at work or school or even at home doing the ironing, I would ask them to take a selfie giving the thumbs up and make a donation to the fundraising page I have set up.

“I have support already from schools and other organisations. It would be great to get more support from as many people as possible.

“I personally truly believe that it may never be possible to raise enough money to fight cancer, but we can all do our bit to make a difference. Every donation will make a difference and is very much appreciated.

People taking part can tweet their photos to @teenagecancer or post it on Facebook using the hash tag #ThumbsUpInMay or email them to thumbsupinmay@gmail.com. Donations can be made online at www.justgiving.com/thumbsupinmay.

They can also text TUIM94 with donations of £1, £2, £5 or £10 to 70070.
