INTREPID family and friends of a Kidderminster teacher who is battling cancer will be taking on a tough trek to help raise money for the hospital where she is being treated.

Kevin Giddins, along with seven relatives and pals, will be carrying out a 54-mile trek in 24 hours – with no rest and no sleeping periods in between!

Mr Giddins’ wife Becky, who is a teacher at King Charles High School in Kidderminster, is currently battling cancer for the third time and is under-going treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

He is hoping to raise around £5,000 that will be sent to the QE Fighting Skin Cancer Fund division of the hospital’s charity.

Last year, the team, also consisting of Ian Giddins, Paul Maybury, Matthew Powell, Frazer Doe, Marc Vaughan, Dale Warner and Luke Mezzone took on the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the hospital.

Mrs Giddins, who is taking part in a drug trial at the hospital, was first diagnosed with skin cancer in 2007, which was removed. But then five years later, she noticed a lump in her groin and discovered the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes.

In 2013, she had a third of her lung removed as the cancer had also spread there. But further bad news was to follow when in January 2014, a regular CT scan showed a tumour had formed just below the kidney.

Mr Giddins said: “Obviously coming as a shock to us all, it hit us all hard. But one person remained so strong. That of course was Becky.

“The treatment Becky has been receiving has thus far managed to hold the disease at bay. So fingers crossed this continues to be the case.

“Under Dr Stevens and his excellent medical Team at the Queen Elizabeth hospital Birmingham, they decided to target this new area of concern with a new combination of drugs.

“These drug trials and the ability to use them are partly due to the money raised for the QE Fighting Skin Cancer charity - allowing research and funding for the licence of the drugs.”

The trek, on June 6, will take place in and around the Brecon Beacons and will involve climbing the 886m Pen Y Fan mountain in the route.

Mr Giddins added: “We conquered the Three Peaks, now we face another massive challenge to kick start our fundraising year - the small matter of a 54 mile trek to be completed in 24 hours with no sleep and no rest periods! Some say we won't make it, but we know otherwise!”
