THE Severn Valley Railway’s steam locomotives will take a back seat as four-wheeled transport takes the starring role in Classic Vehicle Day on Sunday.

Sharing the limelight on this occasion, the SVR’s heritage locomotives will be taking passengers along the Railway’s 16-mile span to enjoy the array of classic vehicles of all shapes and sizes, on display at stations along the line.

More than 150 classics will be showcased during the day, and, to mark the SVR’s 50th anniversary, there will be a special emphasis on 1960s vehicles, with a selection of more than 50 cars from the decade in which the Railway was born.

Among the stars of the show at Kidderminster station will be a 1926 Cluley, 1926 Rolls-Royce and a 1979 Austin Maxi, while an array of 1960s classics will be on display on the station concourse, including several early Minis and a display of memorabilia from ‘the Austin at Longbridge’.

Visitors should look out for an immaculate 1969 Jaguar E-type, a 1972 Simca Estate and a beautifully-maintained 1966 Volkswagen ‘Devon Spaceway’ caravanette, complete with 1960s fittings and equipment  - all among the 15 vehicles on show at Bewdley station.

Clare Gibbard, the SVR’s marketing and communications manager, said: “We are used to our heritage locomotives being the main attraction, but on this occasion, they will be sharing the limelight with their four-wheeled transport counterparts.

“It is always a pleasure to see the range of beautiful and often rare vehicles of yesteryear alongside our locomotives – in many cases their contemporaries – it is a real step back in time.

“We are lucky enough to have some fantastic vehicles on display this year, from beautiful 1920s Rolls Royces through to 1980s Land Rovers and even an iconic Heinkel Bubble Car, which I am sure, will draw the crowds.”
