A KIND Kidderminster grandfather organised a fishing competition to help raise more than £600 for the hospital that helped him overcome cancer.

Phil Reynolds, aged 43, arranged the contest which saw 36 anglers battle it out across three pools at Woodside Fishery in Cleobury Mortimer.

But the main aim of the day was to raise money for the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, who cared for warehouse manager Mr Reynolds earlier this year.

The father-of-three, who has two granddaughters, was diagnosed with kidney cancer in January and was successfully operated on in March.

The event has so far raised more than £600, with more donations to come and Mr Reynolds said he hopes to arrange more in the future.

He said: “After being diagnosed with kidney cancer earlier in the year, I had a successful operation to remove the tumour and part of my right kidney.

“During my recovery I came up with the idea to hold a charity match to give something back to the NHS Redditch Hospital for the hard work and care they gave me while in recovery.

“I currently have raised £605 and hopefully few more donations to follow.

“I contacted several bait and tackle companies and was overwhelmed by some of the donations received.

“So I would like to thank all these guys for backing the event and making it a successful day and helping to raise money for a great cause.

“Due to the great support from these companies and people who attended I am looking to make this an annual event.”
