GREEN Party activists were out in Kidderminster to campaign against a proposed trade deal between the UK and US governments.

Members of the Wyre Forest branch of the party took part in a nationwide day of action, organised by the 38 Degrees group against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) on Saturday (August 22).

The planned TTIP would create the largest free trade zone in the world but critics argue it will lead to the privatisation of public services, such as the NHS.

They also fear it will also allow big corporations to sue the country should government policy reduce their profit.

Wyre Forest Green Party spokesman Natalie McVey said: “Germany has already been sued by Swedish energy company Vattenfall for loss of profit after phasing out nuclear power plants following the Fukushima disaster. This is a clear example of private corporations trying to dictate public policy.”

She added: “It was clear to see that from just talking to people that they were frightened by the deal. Many had not even heard of the deal until today so were shocked to discover that something as massive as this could be kept hidden from the general public.

“People here take pride in the NHS and our democracy so do not wish to see it eroded in the name of private profit for large corporations.

“The Green Party shares these concerns and wishes to strengthen our democracy and public services rather than see them weakened and abused by TTIP.”
