AN author recently visited King Charles I School to talk to students about her latest book.

Sam Angus read extracts from her book, Captain – a story about 15-year-old Billy Bayliss during the outbreak of war – and talked to the year 7 students at the Comberton Road school about what it would have been like to be a child growing up during World War I.

Students were also given the opportunity to get their books signed and interview Sam about what inspired her to write.

One student asked Sam what gave her inspiration for her first novel, Soldier Dog, which she said it was a moment when she was stuck in traffic and heard author Jilly Cooper on the radio talking about Airedale Jack, who was a messenger dog during the war.

Sophie Anderson, a student, said: “The talk was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the interview and would like to interview more authors.”

Ruth Allen, press officer at the school, said: “At King Charles I we know reading underpins everything we do in lessons.

“Meeting authors is a great way to help foster a love of reading as well as providing students with an insight into the exciting world of writing and journalism.”
