A CHARITY set up to support family and friends of road crash victims will hold a special church service this weekend in memory of those who have lost their lives.

The RoadPeace charity’s annual service of remembrance will take place on Sunday (November 15) at 3pm at St Ambrose Church, in Birmingham Road.

The service will involve families of victims and people who have to deal with tragedies in their working lives and will also be attended by local dignitaries.

Peter Picken, former police superintendent and RoadPeace member, said: “Members of the charity set up a local group more than 20 years ago to support anyone touched by the death of loved ones in road crashes and work to reduce the number of deaths.

“We have organised a service each year with this being the 21st service. We have also worked with West Mercia Police to develop practices and systems to meet the needs and concerns of families and friends when they are suddenly faced with the tragic news they have lost a loved one.

“Much has been achieved. Road engineering and education have helped but unfortunately we still far too many deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

“It is very sad to see so many losing their lives in road crashes especially when it is considered that the vast majority of crashes are preventable. You should never stop learning to drive better just because you have passed your test.

“Every time you get behind the wheel remember you must give 100 per cent attention to your driving at all times.”

Inspector Edd Williams, from West Mercia Police, added: “We are continuing to support this important charity. Our family liaison officers play a vital role in supporting families when tragic circumstances occur.

“Our Safer Neighbourhood Teams work closely with the Safer Roads Partnership, with the aim of reducing the amount of fatal and serious injury road traffic collisions.”

Those who attend the service, given by Father Douglas Lamb, can have the names of their loved ones read out and can light a candle in their memory. Reverend Robert Legge Team Vicar, Parish of Kidderminster East, will give the address.
