YOUNGSTERS from across North Worcestershire experienced what it was like to run a police enquiry during a unique exercise.

West Mercia Police held a Children’s Takeover Day on Friday (November 20) which included dozens of pupils from five schools go to Baxter College in Kidderminster and take part in a missing person exercise.

The students acted out the role of the police, making key decisions and managing the enquiry. The investigation involved challenges to enable students to consider a range of options, whilst making it relevant to them.

Pupils were treated to an appearance from police dog Millie as well as representatives from Safer Wyre Forest, Hereford and Worcester Fire Service and The Shuttle, when the pupils held a press conference.

Schools which took part were Baxter College, Stourport High, Wolverley High and Trinity High and Arrow Vale Academy from Redditch.

Inspector Edd Williams, from Kidderminster Police, said: “North Worcestershire's Children's Takeover Day was a resounding success, I was really pleased with how well the students were engaged with the exercise and identified vital lines of enquiry when managing the missing person enquiry.

“The students were able to perform under pressure and meet deadlines. The 'guest speakers' added real value to the day and a true sense of realism.

“The feedback from the students and staff has been really positive, with Mille the Police dog coming in for some specific praise and therefore will be looking to repeat the exercise next year.”
