YOUNGSTERS from a Kidderminster school were given an insight into the importance of literacy and looking after their eyes.

Staff from Boots Opticians in Kidderminster visited Foley Park Community Primary School to encourage pupils to read more for enjoyment as well as highlighting the importance of eye care.

The visit was part of Boots’ partnership with the National Literacy Trust which highlights the link between eye health and literacy, with the aim of improving the life chances of the most disadvantaged children in the UK by improving their literacy.

During their visit to the school in Northumberland Avenue, Boots staff led an assembly and held four classroom events for pupils about reading for enjoyment and the importance of having regular eye checks, as well as spending time reading with the children.

Kidderminster Practice Manager, Julia Price said: “Our team at Boots Opticians Kidderminster, are thrilled to have spent time visiting Foley Park Community Primary School.

“We know that good vision is the foundation for learning, and an undiagnosed vision problem can affect a child’s ability to concentrate for long periods of time and delay reading development.

“We love using our skills to inspire reading and literacy with good eye health, and hope to continue this work with Foley Park Community Primary School and within the Kidderminster community.”

Lyndsey Roberts, reading co-ordinator at Foley Park Community Primary School, said: “As a school we are keen to promote reading for pleasure, as well as understanding that

reading is an essential life skill.

“The children are now aware that good eye care plays a part in that, we jumped at the opportunity to work with Boots Opticians and will continue to promote good eye care.”
