CHILDREN at a Kidderminster primary school have been singing and learning sign language to raise money to help vulnerable deaf children and adults.

The pupils at Birchen Coppice Primary School, in Woodbury Road, took part in sign2sing 2016, an annual fundraising event organised by the Deaf Health Charity SignHealth.

Thousands of schools, businesses and organisations take part learning a specially written song and signs they can perform.

Birchen Coppice headteacher, Kay Butler, said: “We are so excited to be taking part.

“It is a fantastic way for children to learn how important communications is while having fun mastering a little sign language raising money to help improve the health of deaf people.”

Sophie Boden, specialist teaching assistant for the hearing impaired at the school, added: “So far we have raised £155 for the charity and we are hoping to raise even more.

“The children have really enjoyed learning sign language and have really taken it on board.

“We definitely want to take part in the event again next year as we have had such great feedback and we will try and run more events to raise awareness.

“We have one deaf child at the school and two who are hearing impaired and it has been great to see the other children interacting with them through sign language.”

All money raised by those taking part in sign2sing is used by SignHealth to improve access to healthcare for deaf people. SignHealth provides vital services in sign language, including therapy and assistance.
