WYRE Forest MP Mark Garnier was given a direct look at the plight of abandoned dogs and the need for microchipping.

He was invited to Forest Dog Rescue to meet some of the canines currently staying at the Green Gap Kennels, in Far Forest.

Trustees at the kennels also wanted to highlight the change in law that requires all pets to be microchipped, which came into effect earlier this month.

Stephen Read, from Forest Dog Rescue said: “Mr Garnier visited to see first-hand the effect of lost and abandoned dogs and the requirement for the kennels to exist.

“We also want to send out the message to all dog owners of the importance of ensuring their pet is microchipped in accordance with the new law and that, if their dog is not yet compliant, it is not too late to do so.”

The kennels rely entirely on donations and fundraising to carry out the work and will be holding their charity annual auction at Gainsborough House Hotel on Thursday, May 19.

More than 90 lots have been donated to help raise money for Forest Dog Rescue, including a mini break in London, West Midland Safari Park vouchers and a West Bromwich Albion signed football.

Admission is £1 and the viewing of lots is at 6pm and the auction starts at 7.30pm. For more information please contact Wendy Squires on 01299 823621 or email secretary@forest-dog-rescue.org.uk
