YOUNGSTERS at a Kidderminster school came face to face with a Jurassic monster this week as part of a unique history project.

Pupils at Blakedown Primary School were left in awe as a huge animatronic T-Rex suddenly appeared on the grounds in Birmingham Road.

Classes from reception to Year 6 have been studying periods of history and this week it was the turn of dinosaurs and the prehistoric period.

This was applied to all subjects including maths, science and creative writing, and saw children playing the part of palaeontologists and looking for fossils and learning about what dinosaurs looked like.

But the project ‘came to life’ with the visit of a T-Rex, complete with sound effects, and baby on Monday (May 16).

Head teacher Helen Beckford-Bond said: “The children were expecting a visitor but it was quite a surprise when the dinosaurs arrived and there were many left open-mouthed.

“It worked well in the outdoor setting and we were lucky with the weather too.

“With the pressure of ongoing SATs exams and the general standards set that schools have to adhere to, we also try to put in a creative element to ensure the love of learning isn’t lost.”
