VANDALS have attacked a former Kidderminster leisure centre just weeks after it was closed for good.

The Wyre Forest Glades Leisure Centre was subjected to a suspected arson attack on Monday evening (July 25).

Council chiefs have also confirmed receiving a number of reports of alleged break-ins at the vacant site, in Bromsgrove Street, since its closure earlier this month.

The Glades closed its doors on Saturday, July 2, following 30-years of service.

Councillor Marcus Hart, leader of Wyre Forest District Council, said: “Following the closure of the Glades Leisure Centre we have had reports of several break-ins.

“We have been working closely with West Mercia Police and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) to make sure the building is as secure as possible and we have increased security patrols.

“The building was cleared of any items of value before it was boarded up.

“Entering a derelict building is very dangerous and we would urge people to stay away. We would also encourage anyone with information about the break-ins to call officers on 101.”

On Monday night, HWFRS crews from Kidderminster fire station attended to find a fire at the rear door of the former leisure centre at around 8.55pm on July 25.

West Mercia Police confirmed there was a fire at the Glades Leisure Centre building.

Cllr Hart added: “The site is part of our Kidderminster Eastern Gateway project and integral to the council’s ReWyre initiative.

“Redeveloping this area is a priority for the council.

“We have prepared a new vision and development framework for the Eastern Gateway and we are now working on a delivery strategy.”

Anyone with information about the incident on July 25 is asked to call officers on 101, quoting incident reference number 763S of July 25.
