FIVE firefighters suffered minor injuries after their engine crashed into a wall on Stourbridge ring road in the early hours of this morning (Saturday, October 1).

The crash, which happened just before 4am, at the junction of High Street, Audnam, caused gridlock for about six hours.

The engine was left badly damaged but no other vehicles or people were involved. The road was reopened just before midday after the engine was recovered.

The crew, who were from Haden Cross Community Fire Station, were responding to a car crash when the incident happened, and following the smash they were replaced with another fleet.

Group Commander Neil Griffths said: "The five firefighters were taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

"There were some minor injuries but all later left the hospital and returned to their station, before going off duty and returning home.

"We will be giving the crew and their families all the support we can."

West Midlands Fire Service said an investigation into the crash is underway.

West Midlands Police also attended the scene to deal with traffic management.
