PEOPLE in Kidderminster will be urged to wear their poppies with pride following the launch of an annual appeal to support ex-armed forces members and their families.

The Royal British Legion’s Kidderminster branch kick-started their 2016 Poppy Appeal at the town’s train station on Saturday (October 15), looking to match last year’s impressive total of £40,000 raised.

Civic dignitaries including Deputy Lord Lt of County Patricia Bradbury JP MBE, who declared the appeal open, and Kidderminster Mayor Mary Raynor joined standard bearers and other members from military organisations for the event.

Poppies are now in shops across the town while collectors will go out in early November for the appeal.

Frank Collins, chairman of the Kidderminster Royal British Legion, said: “The event went very well. We were delighted to be joined by so many civic dignitaries and Severn Valley Railway were absolutely marvellous.

“Graham Stringer has come on board to help us as our new organiser and we’ve been supported by our wives and families.

“The important thing is for us to continue to help current and former servicemen and women in a variety of ways.

“Last year, the people of Kidderminster were fantastic and helped us raise £40,000 – the largest of any Worcestershire RBL. We are extremely grateful to them all for their support.”

Mr Collins added the legion was looking for new, younger members and anyone interested can contact secretary Elaine Collins on 01562 66097.
