BOXING star Joe Egan gave Kidderminster’s first dedicated gym in two decades a ringing endorsement following a visit to the town.

The hugely popular boxer-turned-actor was at Mikey’s Boxing Gym, in Whitehouse Road, last Thursday (October 20) to meet fighters, members of the public and check out the facilities for himself.

He was invited along by ex-professional Chris Nurse, who trains at the gym, and is long-time friends with the 50-year-old.

Big Joe delighted members by signing autographs on gloves and other items as well as spending time meeting and speaking to people who came through the door.

Michael Mikolajczyk, who runs the gym with his wife Kara, said: “Joe is a larger than life character and I can honestly say he is one of the nicest and most genuine guys I have ever met.

“That was echoed by everyone who came in to meet him. He was so polite and took a genuine interest in everyone he met. Joe even recognised a few people who had only met him a few times many years ago.

“Joe told us that loved what we do with the grading system with the children as there are very few boxing gyms that offer a progression scheme to keep youngsters interested and focused.

“He also put us in touch with some directors of major companies who may be able to do some sponsorship with the gym as he wants to see us do well.

“Overall, he was very impressed and said he will definitely be back down when he is in the area.”
