TEN people have been made redundant following the sudden closure of a Kidderminster golf club.

The Shuttle reported this week that liquidators have moved in to Burlish Park Golf Club, in Zortech Avenue, earlier this month as a result of financial problems suffered by the company.

Hazlewoods LLP, a Bristol-based accountancy and business recovery firm, confirmed that the Burlish Golf Centres Ltd company had ceased trading with 10 members of staff losing their jobs.

In a statement on their Facebook page, management at the club said the death of a director and a continuing legal battle with waste contractors affecting golf operations which, in turn, resulted in a fall in member numbers were the driving factors for the decision.

Vic Ellaby, insolvency practitioner with Hazlewoods, said: “After considering all the options the directors had no alternative but to place the company into liquidation.

“The golf course has experienced a number of difficulties in recent times, particularly over its business model of using spoil as part of course redevelopment, which following a dispute with its contractor has effected the playability of the course.

“In addition, membership numbers have fallen some 50 per cent to the current level of 180.”

The management Facebook statement said: “It is with great sadness that we inform you all of the recent developments at Burlish Park Golf Club.

“After many months of uncertainty, following the passing of one of our Directors and the continuing legal battle with our waste contractors, the decision has been made to liquidate the company, Burlish Park Golf Centres Ltd.

“Membership numbers have been greatly affected as have our visitor green fees. This has left the company financially distressed.

“After long deliberations it has been decided that the financial strains are too great with little sign of improvement in the near or mid-term future.

“We would like to take the opportunity to thank our members that have remained loyal to Burlish Golf Centres Ltd.”
