A NEAR-vertical rock face near the summit of Mount Everest has collapsed, a British mountaineer has said.

The Hillary Step – named after Sir Edmund Hillary who was the first person, along with Tenzing Norgay, to scale it on the way to the summit – was considered one of the trickiest parts of the ascent of the world’s tallest mountain.

It was believed the face was damaged by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal which struck in 2015 but it was not confirmed owing to snow.
