CONSERVATIVE Mark Garnier has reclaimed the Wyre Forest seat he has held for the last seven years with a huge majority.

The International Trade Minister polled 29,859 of the 52,200 votes cast - giving him an increased majority of 13,444 and 58 per cent of the vote.

Labour’s Dr Matt Lamb came second with a total of 16,525 – in what became a clear two horse race.

It was a bad night for the remaining three parties in Wyre Forest, who polled such few votes that they even lost their deposits.

Liberal Democrats’ Shazu Miah polled 1,943, UKIP’s George Connolly 1,777 and the Green Party’s Brett Caulfield 1,025.

A delighted Mr Garnier said: "It has exceeded my expectations and is incredibly flattering to get such a huge share of the vote.

"This is a very humbling experience but the thing that matters the most to me is that I work doubly hard and make sure I deliver for the people of Wyre Forest.

"My focus is to bring about better paid jobs and improved training and increase the skills of the district. That is an absolute must to improve the quality of life."

Dr Lamb said: "Obviously, I am disappointed not to win. The best result would have been a victory.

“But it is a tough seat to win.

“What is important is that Labour have increased the majority. In 2015, we had more than 9,000, and now we have more than 16,000 votes. That’s more than a 6,000 vote increase.

“But what we have seen in Wyre Forest is the collapse of the small parties. What many people will see now is that the Wyre Forest seat is a fight between Labour and the Conservatives.”
