TRADE union chiefs have demanded Brintons bosses reveal their intentions for the future of the business in Kidderminster, following the announcement that 60 workers look set to lose their jobs.

In an open letter the Community Trade Union calls for Brintons Carpets CEO, Duccio Baldi, to publicly state his plans for the future of the business in the town.

Last week, the Shuttle revealed bosses at Brintons had announced they are proposing to restructure processes and reduce the headcount at its Stourport Road site by 60 full-time production employees. They also propose to cease the weaving of Axminster carpets at the firm's Kidderminster site after around 230 years.

A spokesman for Brintons told the Shuttle last week the decision had been made to remain "competitive globally" and maintain its position as a "market leader", but would not make any further comments regarding the letter due to company being in the middle of a 30-day consultation period with staff.

The open letter, which was anonymously leaked to the Shuttle, said: "Members are shell shocked from yet another round of redundancies and have grave concerns for their futures given that you are planning to have just 53 workers and two looms in operation moving forward.

"In December 2015 in response to announcing 19 redundancies you stated that "there is no reason why carpets cannot be made in Kidderminster for at least 5-10 years". However, you proceeded to announce a further 60 redundancies just two months later in February 2016, this is in addition to countless other job losses both before and after this time period.

"I call upon you to make a firm public commitment and state your intentions for this business.

"Community members have given you decades of loyal service, I would suggest that the least you can do for them in return is to be honest and open about their future and work with Community to ensure the survival of this iconic brand in Kidderminster."

Last week, Rob Greenfield, group manufacturing and logistics director at Brintons, said “Brintons operates in an extremely competitive global marketplace. In order to maintain and strengthen our position as one of the world’s leading suppliers of bespoke carpets, it is vital we constantly review our business operations and are able to respond to prevailing trading conditions.

“We will where possible, offer new employment opportunities at our Telford plant.

“The proposed restructure is part of our long term strategy to safeguard the company’s future interests.”
