SONGS and poems inspired by Kidderminster’s carpet industry will be performed as part of Heritage Day 2017 next month.

Heather Wastie, Worcestershire’s Poet Laureate 2015-16, will draw on music and verse on a journey through the town’s industrial past on Saturday, September 9.

She will be performing throughout the day at Kidderminster Town Hall from 10am-4pm.

And in a 21st century heritage twist, visitors can try out online computer games influenced by the local carpet industry in a special display by students from Kidderminster College’s ICT and Gaming faculty.

There will also be spinning demonstrations and exhibitions by key groups working to explore and preserve the detail of Wyre Forest’s past.

Members of Wyre Forest Historical Research Group will be on hand to give visitors tips on investigating local and family history.

Kidderminster Archaeological and Historical Society will be presenting its 60th anniversary exhibition with details of its digs and how it helped save Caldwell Tower.

The Weavers Cottages Trust will be celebrating the success of its conservation project in the Horsefair and talks throughout the day will chart the history of the cottages and how they were saved and restored.

The day also includes self-guided tours around the town hall, featuring the Victorian council chamber, Mayor’s Parlour, court room, Music Room with its famous 1855 organ, and the staircase portrait gallery featuring civic leaders over the past 150 years.

Meanwhile, tours on a classic bus to important historical locations on Heritage Day are expected to prove popular and now include the chance to see a modern carpet loom in action at Brockway Carpets.

The bus trips run from 10am-1pm and tickets costing £2 (£1 concessions) can be obtained from the town hall or by calling 01562 732158.
