A GRIEVING mother whose teenage son died of an undetected heart condition has helped organise a free screening day in Bewdley next week.

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) will host the heart screening day for young people aged 14-35 at Bewdley Medical Centre, in Dog Lane, on Saturday, September 23.

The screening has been funded in memory of Robert Poysor who tragically collapsed and died in 1996 at the age of 15.

Robert’s mother Diane Tolley said: “My son collapsed and died of an undetected heart condition in Northwood Lane, on May Day Bank Holiday 1996 whilst out cycling with two friends.

“He was a normal healthy teenager who attended Bewdley High School.

“I have been a supporter of CRY ever since. We often hear in the media when it happens to young people in sports but statistics say that at least 12 young people die every week from sudden cardiac death and 80 per cent show no prior symptoms of a heart defect.

“The CRY team are able to screen 100 young people in a day. We held a screening last year and all the appointments were filled long before the event.

“Raising awareness of these life threatening conditions is vital to saving young lives.”

She added that former Wyre Forest MP Dr Richard Taylor will be visiting to lend his support to the event.

Anyone interested in booking a visit can do so at www.testmyheart.org.uk or by calling CRY on 0203 691 0000.
