A PEDESTRIAN has died after a crash on the A456 in Bewdley this morning.

The pedestrian - a man - was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident after he was in collision with a van outside West Midlands Safari Park at around 4.50am.

This is the second fatal crash on the road in just over two years, following the death of 16-year-old Safari Park worker Lewis Chambers in December 2015.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: "We are currently looking into this morning's incident on the A456 in Bewdley in conjunction with the Police.

"We are unable to comment further at this stage."

Police have closed the road and are appealing for witnesses.

A spokesman said: "West Mercia Police are responding to a fatal road traffic collision on the A456 near the West Midlands Safari Park in Bewdley, Worcestershire.

"Police were called to the incident at approximately 4.50am today to reports that one vehicle, a white Mercedes Sprinter panel van had been involved in a collision with a pedestrian man who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The A456 is currently closed between Bewdley and Sutton Park Road in Kidderminster whilst the emergency services work at the scene."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman added: “On arrival, ambulance staff found the man in a very serious condition with CPR being carried out.

“The man was moved to the back of an ambulance where ambulance crews and the doctor worked on him.

“Sadly, despite all efforts, it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

Buses are being diverted away from the area.

Employees will need to park away from Kidderminster Road and walk along the road to the park to gain access.

Any witnesses to the collision that haven’t yet spoken to officers are asked to call 101, quoting incident number 51s of 29/01/2018.
