A KIDDERMINSTER attraction kicks off its 2018 season of events with some half term activities this week.

The Museum of Carpet will open its doors on Tuesday (February 20) with craft activities during the half-term break, starting with events to coincide with Science Week.

Children can create bubbling volcanoes, make paper rockets and have a go with marble inks. The museum is asking for donations to take part in the activities to help cover the costs of materials.

The museum will also be hosting adult craft workshops in 2018, with opportunities to learn traditional Japanese braiding, have a go at quilting and other fascinating traditional skills.

In correlation with Wool Week 2018 in the autumn, one to one spinning tuition sessions will be available to help spinners develop their techniques and learn new skills.

In March 17, a quilt created by members of Kidderminster Forest Quilters inspired by designs at the museum will be on display. It will remain on show through spring with a chance to win the quilt at the end through the sale of raffle tickets.

Following the success of its Lucienne Day: Living Design exhibition last year, in July the museum will launch its Summer exhibition ‘Journey to Japan’, highlighting stunning Japanese ink drawings and intricate stencils collected by carpet factory founder Michael Tomkinson in the 1850s.

An activities and events programme will run alongside this including a family theatre performance re-enacting Michael Tomkinson’s fascinating talk on his return from Japan.

Museum Manager Beth Broadway said: “We’re really excited about the events we’ve got planned for 2018.

“We’ve made an effort to include activities that will appeal to a wide range of people, offering chances to try new things and enjoy their visit to the museum.

“Our exhibitions will also provide fantastic opportunities to work with local groups and schools on smaller related projects.”

People can find out more about all the upcoming events and activities by visiting www.museumofcarpet.org.uk or via their Facebook page.

The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10am-1.30pm with extended openings during the school holidays.
