A FRESH push to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 has been blocked amid accusations of a “corrupt and unfair” filibuster by the Government.

Labour MP Peter Kyle’s Representation of the People (Young People’s Enfranchisement) Bill, which aims to allow 16 and 17-year-olds to vote in elections and referendums, was talked out after Tory MPs decided to devote more than four hours to another uncontroversial Bill.

The move was branded “corrupt and unfair” by SNP chief whip Patrick Grady, who called for a reform of how private members’ bills are considered in the Commons.

ANIMAL welfare workers are investigating after a blind cat was found in a bin.

The cat, who also suffered from a neurological condition, was handed in to a vet practice after he was found in a bin in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.

Scottish SPCA officers are investigating whether the cat, who the charity’s staff named Dusty, was placed in the bin or fell into it.

TENS of thousands of Volkswagen and Seat cars could be recalled in the UK over fears their seatbelts may malfunction at high speed.

German firm VW Group, which owns the brands, is reportedly set to issue a global safety recall affecting up to 28,000 recently sold Seat Arona, Seat Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo vehicles in the UK.

Tests by Finnish motoring magazine Tekniikan Maailma found that when three passengers are travelling in the rear seats, the positioning of the middle seat belt buckle means it can unfasten the left buckle during a high speed lane changing manoeuvre.
