CAMPAIGNING suffragettes will be out in force in Kidderminster next week – as part of a unique film project.

The Community Broadcast Company (CBC) is producing a trilogy of short films to celebrate the centenary of women being given the right to vote and pay homage to such an exciting part of Kidderminster’s history.

And a well-known figure from the movement will be speaking at Kidderminster Town Hall on Wednesday, June 20, as part of the ‘Deeds not Words’ project!

Back in 1912 Emmeline Pankhurst, founder of the radical Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), visited Kidderminster during a campaign tour to drum up support for her quest for women’s suffrage.

Resident Helen Talbot, was so inspired by her speech that she went on to form the area’s branch the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) or more widely known as the suffragists, under the leadership of Millicent Fawcett.

Each CBC film will depict one of the three colours of the suffragettes’ flag and its meaning: purple for dignity, white for purity and green for hope.

They will be shown throughout August at this year’s Kidderminster Arts Festival (KAF) in a public place for all to enjoy.

Through a social media campaign, The CBC called for local like-minded women to be part of their special film project, and driving momentum for gender parity in the film world.

Coralie Hudson, Writer and Director said: “We have been overwhelmed by such a fantastic response and are still keen for even more local women to get involved!

“We invite those passionate about this important piece of our history to come down to the Town Hall on Wednesday and share in remembering Kidderminster’s part in the movement. Men are of course also very welcome to show their support.”

The Arts Festival will also see The CBC screening their narrative film, ‘Tapestry’, sponsored by Bond Worth Carpets; which pays homage to Kidderminster’s carpet industry heritage.
