A HISTORIC midsummer Kidderminster tradition dating back more than 220 years has taken place in the town’s oldest street.

The Supper of Peace and Good Neighbourliness saw representatives of businesses on Church Street enjoy a customary feast at La Brasserie.

This year is was hosted by Kidderminster Civic Society, which this year celebrates 25 years since it was formed.

Another time honoured tradition, the distribution of Penny Loaves and Plum Buns to the ‘maidens of Church Street’ also took place.

Both traditions were started by former Kidderminster resident John Brecknell – a poor man who struck it rich.

Mr Brecknell left £150 in his will in 1778 to perpetuate the ritual with the aim of promoting peace and goodwill in the area.
