DELIGHTED pupils and teachers celebrated the official opening of their impressive new facilities.

A new wing at Heronswood Primary and Pre-School, in Spennells, was officially opened by head teacher Rhoda Pierpoint, Wyre Forest District Council leader Marcus Hart and ward councillor Peter Dyke.

The school was awarded Government cash to fund the near-£700,000 new block which will replace old mobile classrooms which were temporarily erected more than 10 years ago.

Work started on the site in November last year and, seven months on, Year 1 and 2 children are ready to move into their new rooms.

As well as modern classrooms, the wing houses a new entrance area, cloakroom, toilet block and ‘intervention space’ for children to use.

In 2014, Worcestershire County Council identified the need to create the extra facilities to meet a need for additional places for children living in Spennells and surrounding areas.

As a result Heronswood now has the space to take 60 children in each year group.

Mrs Pierpoint said: “Heronswood Primary is an amazing please to be. Our children inspire us on a daily basis and we ensure they get the very best education - which excites and motivates them to love learning.

“We are delighted with the new additions to our school and are so pleased to see the children taking a real pride in their new rooms.

“We are in such a fortunate place as we have now had eight brand new classrooms over the last three years.”

Earlier this academic year, the school also received a positive Ofsted report following an inspection.

It was rated ‘good’ overall but given an ‘outstanding’ grade in both leadership and management and personal development, behaviour and welfare of pupils.

*Heronswood will be holding open days on Tuesday, June 26 at 9am-1pm and Thursday, June 28 from 1pm-7pm. People are welcome to pop along.
