A TALENTED teenage scientist from Bewdley has been handed a prestigious physics award by experts in the field.
Star Powell was named ‘Young Physicist of the Year’ by the Ogden Trust for her exceptional efforts in studying the GCSE subject.
The 15-year-old Bewdley School pupil, who is also the town’s Young Mayor for this municipal year, was nominated for the honour by her teachers due to her remarkable improvement in the subject since September last year.
She said: “This is such a huge honour and I’m delighted to have received it. When I found out I’d been nominated, I was so pleased.
“I do triple science for GCSE but I wasn’t the best physicist. But I worked at it and put a lot of effort and focus into improving and now I’m doing some A-level standard stuff.
“To be recognised for this makes all that work worthwhile.”
Her proud mum Stephanie Stead added: “Star has shown a lot of determination and worked so hard and she truly deserves this.
“She has come on in leaps and bounds in physics and I’m so proud of her. Hopefully, she’ll inspire other children not to give up on a subject and stick at it.”
As Bewdley’s Young Mayor, Star will be representing the interest of the town’s young people at council meetings, as well as attending events.
She said: “It’s quite a responsibility but I’m really enjoying making sure the voices of young people are heard.”
