ANGRY Wyre Forest Labour members have accused district MP Mark Garnier of hypocrisy following the latest Government vote on Brexit.

Mr Garnier voted in line with the Tory Government in favour of ERG amendments to Prime Minister Theresa May’s own Brexit paper during a controversial commons vote earlier this week.

But Wyre Forest Labour’s Stephen Brown said the arrangement would lead to hard border in Northern Ireland and leave the UK in a perilous financial situation.

He also called on Mrs May to resign and call a General Election, after she looked to extend Parliamentary recess by an extra five days.

Mr Garnier said he has made his position on Brexit clear and voted to help bring an orderly Brexit that supports the economy.

Mr Brown said: “Theresa May’s lost the country and her own Party. We have 19 working days left until October to save any kind of Brexit deal and she wanted to cut it short, cowering away more interested in saving her own skin.

“In his Shuttle column last week, Garnier was preaching about the need for protecting service industries, including his favoured banking in any Brexit deal because of its importance to our economy and jobs.

“By voting for the ERG amendments, he has voted against protecting services and for blocking any common rules between us and the EU, rules that are factual norms between ‘any’ global trading partners.

“He is a hypocrite and by blindly going along with what his Government want him to do, he is betraying his constituents and plunging them along with the rest of the country into a deeper crisis.

“Labour would negotiate for a jobs first Brexit with the EU, without all the hysterical Brexiteer rhetoric that is currently causing untold damage in our negotiations.

“We’d seek single market access and a customs union so that the economy and jobs are protected, including for our constituents in Wyre Forest.”

Mr Garnier said: “I have been happy to make my views clear on the whole Brexit process through my column in the Kidderminster Shuttle, both recently and since the referendum was called.

“I supported the Government recently and I am keen to ensure we have an orderly Brexit that supports our economy.

“Interestingly, whilst meeting global businesses as I travelled as Minister for Investment at the Department of International Trade, the growing concern amongst potential investors into the UK was that of a hard left wing, Corbyn led government.

“Where I disagree with the government, I make it perfectly clear to ministers and whips and as a result of my, and others, intervention, the government has withdrawn its proposals to enter the summer recess early."
